概要

BUREAUの編集は、個々の作品から始まります。先に決めたテーマに当てはめるのではなく、その作品が何を扱い、なぜその形式を選んでいるのかを確かめます。

作品、制度、場所、技術、言葉は、規則、手続、判断の積み重ねによって形づくられています。BUREAUは、誰が決めるのか、何を根拠に決めるのか、その決定が誰にどう影響するのかを問う作品に関心があります。公に示された説明と、実際の運用とのずれにも目を向けます。

掲載を判断するときは、題材の大きさや新しさよりも、対象を具体的に捉えているか、すでにある説明に何を加えるか、形式が内容に合っているかを重視します。

掲載するもの。 批評、研究、エッセイ、フィクション、詩、日記、インタビュー、記録を掲載します。画像、音声、映像、データ、コード、HTMLを使った作品も対象です。形式の珍しさではなく、その形式が作品に必要かどうかを見ます。

ウェブ。 ウェブは、完成した内容を置くためだけの場所ではありません。読む順序、画面上の配置、リンク、動き、操作、コードは、作品の意味や受け取られ方に関わります。必要な場合は、それらも作品の一部として考えます。

編集。 編集では、構成、文章、翻訳、デザイン、表示方法を検討します。内容に関わる変更は、理由を説明し、著者または制作者と相談して決めます。

言語。 BUREAUは日本語と英語で刊行します。両言語で掲載する場合も、逐語訳にはこだわりません。内容を保ちながら、それぞれの言語で自然に読める文章に整えます。必要に応じて、説明の量や参照の示し方も調整します。

運営。 BUREAUは、日本を拠点に一人で運営しています。編集者の氏名は公表していません。作品の選定、編集、掲載、訂正、連絡については、BUREAUが責任を負います。

About

BUREAU begins with each work. Rather than fitting a submission into a predetermined theme, it asks what the work examines and why it takes the form it does.

Works, institutions, places, technologies, and languages are shaped by rules, procedures, and decisions. BUREAU is interested in work that asks who makes those decisions, what they are based on, and whom they affect. It also looks at gaps between official accounts and actual practice.

Editorial decisions are based not on the scale or novelty of a subject, but on how clearly the work addresses it, what it adds to existing accounts, and whether its form suits its content.

What BUREAU publishes. BUREAU publishes criticism, research, essays, fiction, poetry, diaries, interviews, and documentation. It also considers work made with images, sound, moving image, data, code, or HTML. What matters is not novelty of form, but whether the form is necessary to the work.

The web. The web is more than a place to host finished material. Sequence, layout, links, motion, interaction, and code can affect the meaning of a work and how it is received. When relevant, BUREAU treats them as part of the work.

Editing. Editing may involve structure, wording, translation, design, and presentation. Any change that affects the substance of a work is explained and discussed with the author or maker before it is made.

Language. BUREAU publishes in Japanese and English. When a work appears in both languages, the two versions do not need to match word for word. Each is edited to read naturally while keeping the substance consistent. Explanations and references may be adjusted where needed.

Operation. BUREAU is run by one person in Japan. The editor’s name is not made public. BUREAU is responsible for selection, editing, publication, corrections, and correspondence.
